European Heat Pump Forum: Brussels has its mind on heating

At the fifteenth European Heat Pump Forum, it was apparent that the EU is beginning to realise that it cannot achieve the climate protection goals that it has set for itself without a turnaround in the area of heating. However, Brussels is just beginning to wake up to this fact and many questions are still unanswered.

The British manufacturer of a solar thermal/heat pump hybrid system Magic Thermodynamic Box ltd. took a major step to the mainstream market: The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), which is the British governing body for renewable energy products, accepted a new category for “Solar assisted Heat Pumps”. This is mandatory to receive government subsidies.

For the fifth time, the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) calls European cities and regions to submit their applications for the Heat Pump City of the Year Awards. The prize will be awarded to heat pump projects and best practices in the heat pump sector.

“Go for ambitious 2030 targets and stick to them – energy efficiency is a driver for competitiveness and innovation!” said Hans-Joachim Banhardt, Vice President Health, Safety, Environment and Fire protection of the Bosch Group along a lunch debate on energy efficiency, organised by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) and the German Electrical and Electrotechnical Association (ZVEI) last Wednesday.

The heat pump market is recovering. This is the conclusion reached in a new study by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) on the 2014 heat pump market, which analysed statistics from heat pump markets in 21 European countries.


New F-gas regulation published

The European Commission published the new regulation to cut the emission of fluorinated gases (F-gases). The new EU legislation will go into action on 1st January 2015 and is to reduce F-gas emissions in the EU by two thirds until 2030.

The European Heat Pump Association is holding a competition to find the Heat Pump City of the Year 2014. After a jury chose four final candidates, you can now cast your vote for the one project involving heat pumps you like best. The online poll will assign 3 points to the city most voted, 2 points to the city second most voted and 1 point to the city with third most votes.


Heat Incentive launched in the UK

It took quite a while, but the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (dRHI) is finally launched. The RHI rewards householders and social landlords that install renewable heating systems. The incentive guarantees payments for each generated unit of solar heat over a time period of seven years.

The European Parliament cleared the way for finalising the F-gas file by adopting the consolidated text on March 12. As such it is very likely that the regulation will be published before summer. The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) welcomed the decision.
