Kloben awarded for environment-improving technology

Kloben was able to win the prize for a solar plant, realized in the nursing home Santa Margherita in Pavia (North West Italy). The plant provides combined solar cooling and heating for the 200-bed building. The solar field is composed of 69 vacuum tube collectors with a total absorption area of 230 m2. During summer, when the temperature in the cylinders reaches 80 °C, hot water is supplied to an absorption chiller. The chilled water is stored at 7 °C in insulated cylinders and used for air conditioning of the building. Residual heat is dissipated through an evaporation tower.

During winter and in middle season, the absorption machinery and the cylinders are used as a back up for heating purposes. They produce about 80 MWth energy that does not have to be produced by conventional boilers. Over the year the combined plant saves an estimated 50,000 m3 of natural gas.
