Early in June, the Italian Prysmian group opened a new submarine cable manufacturing plant in Finland. Pikkala has always been the company's centre for high-voltage cables and by investing approximately € 40 million, Prysmian has now also created production capacities for high-voltage direct current transmission cables.
"Implementing large-scale sustainable energy projects in northern Europe and especially in Germany calls for the development of new solutions for electricity transfer, in particular for offshore wind farms", explained Marcello Del Brenna, CEO at Prysmian Powerlink.
In addition to Finland, the group has also invested in the expansion of its production capacities at its Arco Felice plant in Italy. These investments are partly a reaction to an order from Western Link worth € 800 million. This includes a maritime connection between Scotland and England.
The connection of offshore wind farms is becoming an increasingly important field of business for Prysmian. Diverse projects in Denmark, the Netherlands and Great Britain have bee completed or are underway. Apart from this, Prysmian is supplying the cable for the high voltage direct current transmission connections for the German transformer platforms BorWin2, HelWin1, HelWin2 and SylWin1.
