First private offshore wind farm in the US moving forward

Dominion Energy Virgina is planning the mid-Atlantic’s first offshore wind project. DONG Energy will help the electic utility company as part of an agreement and strategic partnership. Engineering and development will start immediately.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is going to be the second offshore wind project in the United States of America and the first one to be owned by an electric utility company. By signing an agreement and strategic partnership its owner Dominion Energy Virgina and DONG Energy have made a big step forward. Engineering and development work is expected to begin immediately to support the targeted installation by the end of 2020.

The project is an important first step towards offshore wind development for Virginia and the U.S. It marks the beginning of what could end in the deployment of hundreds of wind turbines off Virginia’s coast. This may result in a new Virginia economy that is cleaner, stronger and more diverse. Virginia would be in a ideal position to support not only its own offshore wind farms but also possible projects in Masachusetts, New York and Maryland.

The phase one development of two wind turbines will be built approximately 43 km off the coast of Virginia Beach on a 8.6 km² site leased by the Virginia Department of Mines,

Minerals and Energy. The project will provide the critical operational, weather and environmental experience needed for large-scale development in the adjacent 456 km² site leased by Dominion Energy from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). Full deployment could generate up to 2,000 MW of energy.

DONG Energy, based in Denmark with North American headquarters in Boston, owns 22 offshore wind farms in Europe and Asia. Samuel Leupold, executive vice President and CEO of Wind Power at DONG Energy pointed out, that the new partnership can be a stepping stone to a larger commercial-scale partnership.
